Donegal Castle

Northwest Ireland | County Donegal

Donegal Castle is situated beside the River Eske in centre of Donegal town in County Donegal, in the northwest of Ireland. The first tower house on this site was built by powerful O'Donnell clan in 15th Century. O'Donnell Family burnt and left the castle in 1600, to prevent it being of use by English forces. In 1623, the ruined stronghold was granted to Sir Basil Brooke, a captain of the English army. He repaired and remodelled tower house, adding windows and several gables. He also added three-storey, Jacobean mansion to the side of the tower. The Brooke Family retained the castle until 18th Century, and then it was let to fall into ruin. The next owner was Earl of Arran, who maintained the ruined castle in good order and donated it to the State, in 1898. The OPW restored the tower house in 1990's, but the mansion left as a ruin. Castle's roofing and floors were restored using 15th and 17th century techniques and materials. Among the many interesting features and props you will find the 15th Century cobblestones, large fireplace with Brooke's Coats of Arms carved on it, spiral staircase designed to facilitate the combat during a possible attack on the castle and collections of antique furniture.
